When we start travelling a new path in another country we often feel alone and lacking support. We have left our family and friends behind and we find ourselves in a foreign background that can make us feel afraid and anxious. But we can also feel alone even if we are accompanied when there is a lack of emotional bond between ourselves and the people we are interacting with. Loneliness is difficult to endure because we are social beings with a need to be in touch with other people and communicate with them, thus building solid bonds that will make us feel connected to one another.
Here are some ideas to help you feel better whenever you feel alone:
LISTEN TO YOURSELF: The first step is to identify and accept your feeling of loneliness. It is a very normal feeling that we all experience at some point. When we express our feelings we free ourselves emotionally and we acquire a better knowledge about how we are feeling.
BE MORE ACTIVE: If you wish to befriend someone or if you have a hobbie that you and other people may share, be the one to make the first move. If you keep an active attitude you will create the situations you want instead of waiting for them.
AVOID ISOLATING YOURSELF: The fear of rejection or the fear of what other people may think about us may paralise us when trying to establish new relationships. However, the very reason why you feel bad is precisely because you are alone.”. Think about all you can win if you overcome that fear.
JOIN A GROUP: Sharing tastes and hobbies with other people makes us feel more connected to other people while at the same time we are doing things we enjoy doing.
VOLUNTEER: There are many pros to being a volunteer such as belonging in a team, hanging with other people, experiencing new things, learning and, obviously, helping other people through an activity that will also give us a sense of achievement.
